Spice Up Your Curtains with Eye Catching Curtain Rods & Decorative
Drapery Hardware Decorative curtain rods
can add the finishing touches to your window dressing with unique finials that make
your window treatment the envy of your
neighbors! Consider six fundamentals when purchasing
your
decorative curtain rods and drapery hardware: |
 |
Fundamental 1:
The Drapery Rod
Consider the impact you
want to create with your curtain rod. In general, the thicker the rod,
the more impact it can create.
You may choose to overemphasize the rod to create a
luxurious overdone
look for the treatment. Alternatively, you may want to deemphasize
the rod to draw attention to the richness of the fabric, or other elements of the
treatment. Either way, make a purposeful choice.
Decorative curtain rods are available in wood, wrought iron
and contemporary wire sets.
Wood curtain rods tend to be the most versatile of
the rod options available today. They come in smooth
wood or artful, intricately carved designs that are
sculpture unto themselves. They are are available in
thicknesses ranging from 1 3/8" to 3" diameter poles.
are also available. Contemporary in nature,
these modern sets create a statement of simplicity and
clean, lite lines. Be aware that while the
hardware does not weigh much, most require constant tension
to be kept on the wire so the treatment does not sag.
This tension requirement means the anchor points on the
mounting surface must be capable of maintaining tension
long-term. Wire rods do not support heavy
drapes. If you are considering using a wire set, be
sure the fabric of the treatment you plan to hang will not cause the wire
to sag or break from the weight. In general, we recommend
hanging sheer drapes or other very lightweight materials
from wire rods. |

2: The
Finials
Finials are the
decorative pieces that attach to the end of a wood or cast
iron rod.
As with the rod, carefully design
the look you create with the finials you select. Some
finials are relatively short, focusing attention on the
treatment. Other finials are longer and can become the focus of the treatment
themselves. Choose what you want
to accentuate and select the finials that will appropriately
focus attention.
Design Idea:
Rather than having the finials in the same color as the
pole, consider using a contrasting color to add more depth
to your treatment. For example, if you select a cherry
wood color rod, consider using natural wood colored finials.
Do the same with wrought iron. Let your creativity run
wild. |

3:
Sconces
Sconces are design
elements that are affixed to the wall through which fabric
or a drapery rod runs. They are multi purpose in that
they can be used to display a swag or used as a holder for a
rod.
As with finials and
hold backs, consider contrasting the sconce with the other
hardware colors you are using to create a unique display
that completes your room.

4: Finely Detailed Rings
Rings are functional in providing a means of
suspending a curtain from the rod. They can also add additional depth of
detailing to create a luxurious look. Stop
to appreciate curtains that professional designers have
coordinated; they ensure even the smallest of details
enhance the overall experience of the treatment.
If your rod is plain, consider using decorative rings to add
a layer of detailing that your friends will appreciate.
Decorative rings can enhance the fine detailing of a drapery
rod, creating a refined, sophisticated look. |

5:
Hold Backs & Swag Holders
As their name implies,
hold backs, aka swag
holders, act
to pull the drape back from the window to allow light into
your room. Artfully implementing distinctive swag
holders will add depth and character to
your window treatment.
Design Idea: Most finials have
available with them a coordinating hold back. You can
use the recommended hardware, or use your
creativity in selecting coordinating or contrasting hold
backs. Consider using contrasting colors, or
contrasting textures to add dimension.
|
 |
|

|
Design Idea: Consider using
a hold back on one side of the treatment and leaving the other
side to hang naturally to create an artistic flair.
Design Idea: Consider
combining a post-style hold back with a decorative tassel
for a classical look.

Decorative Drapery Jewelry & Embellishments
Drapery Jewelry is a
hot trend in drapery fashion today. Strictly speaking,
curtain jewelry is
the use of old jewelry to dress up your curtains. The
idea can also be expanded to include using covered buttons or other
embellishment to create a fashionable look that makes your
curtains unique to you.
Following these
simple guidelines can help you create a fashionable window
treatment that sets your windows apart from the neighbors
and makes your home the desired gathering place for enjoying
a glass of wine with close friends.
